Inscriptions Boon or Blot I love to shop for used books. One of my favorite finds in the last couple of years was copies of Ex Libris  and Rereadings  by Anne Fadiman, together in one store. Id been looking for both books for some time, always finding a lone copy of Ex Libris, but never Rereadings. I like things to match, so it became this absurd quest to find both books at the same used bookstore (I know now theres a third book in this beautiful little trio, but at the time I missed the memo). The day I found both books together was a day for celebration. I bought both, triumphantly, and then proceeded to not read them.  Last week, after writing about memoirs about books, I pulled my copy of  Ex Libris  off the shelf to finally, finally read. When I opened it I noticed, for the first time, the inscription written on the dedication page in purple ink: June, 2003 Education is the ability to listen to almost anything without losing your temper or your confidence. Robert Frost Kim Thanks for a great school year! M.H. What are the chances of finding a book with an inscription to a person with my own name? Id guess not high, but Im a reader, not a statistician. Coincidentally (or, perhaps not), Fadiman has an essay in Ex Libris  about inscriptions in books Words on a Flyleaf.  For Fadiman (and myself), inscriptions can be a blessing or a curse: Unlike the card that accompanies, say, a sweater, from which it is soon likely to part, a book and its inscription are permanently wedded. This can be either a boon or a blot. On the plus side, coming across an inscription either in a book I  received as a gift or one I plucked randomly off the shelf at a used bookstore always makes me smile. Particularly if they are, like the inscription I found in Ex Libris, heartfelt and slightly verbose. I always wonder who the writer and  receiver  were. It seems clear that Kim was a teacher or administrator, but who is M.H.? A fellow teacher? A student? A friend who spent the year listening to Kim complain or exclaim about her students? Its hard to know, but you have to admire M.H. for quoting Robert Frost. Yet despite how much I love finding inscriptions, I never write them in the books I give. Im a notorious book pusher at holidays, but writing an inscription seems  presumptuous. Its not my place to write on the pages of someone elses book before they get the chance to read it. Plus, what if its a book theyve already read? A book they dont want to read?  A book they want to pass on to someone else? How will they return or exchange or pass on that book if Ive already scribbled on the first page? More importantly, an inscription gives a book weight entirely outside how the reader will feel after reading it. A book suddenly has meaning above and beyond, I think youd really like this story. It has significance tied to a date or time or relationship that makes the book hard to part with whether you want to keep it or not. I dont want to put that sort of pressure into the gift of a book.  After all, how would M.H. feel if he/she knew Kim gave away the copy of Ex Libris  that he/she bought and signed? If that Kim were me, Id hate to find out.

She seems upset and interested in the girls death even though she has no idea of her involvement. Later on in the play we see a complete reversal of the personality she had showed before. She acts like an adult taking responsibility for her part in the death of Eva Smith. However the part she played in Eva Smiths life shows us how she can easily become jealous and take out her general anger on someone innocent. This shows us how self-centred and vain she is. On the other hand Gerald played a different part in the life of Eva Smith. Although by the time Gerald met her she was using a different name, Daisy Renton. He took advantage of the fact that unemployment was high at the time and exploited his workers need for a job. It is a fact that many factory owners did exactly the same thing and I believe the play shows how wrong this really was. This gives the audience a very strong social message. We are shown how all of the characters abused their social standings and power to get what they wanted. The play has the effect of making its audience look inside themselves to see if they are in anyway like Mr Birling or the other characters. The Inspector plays a very important part in the play. You could say that he is the key to the whole thing as the play couldnt go on without him. Therefore he is the most important character in the play. I believe J. B Priestley makes the Inspector the focal point of the whole play. His achieves this by giving him certain actions and in the things he says. For example, on page twelve, act one the Inspector dominates what is being said, cutting through massively Ive been round to the room she had, and shed left a letter and a sort of diaryà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‚ ¦ He interrupts Mr Birling who up to now appeared to be the dominating figure in the room. Here Mr Birling would have gone on to say something that doesnt interest the Inspector and so he stops him before he has chance to do so. The Inspector also allows other characters to put pressure on the one undergoing questioning. For example he allows Sheila to apply pressure onto Gerald while he is being questioned. Multilple Personality Disorders Multiple Personality Disorder (MPD) or Dissociative Identity Disorder (DID) was first recognized in the 1700's but was not understood so therefore it was forgotten. Many cases show up in medical records through the years, but in 1905, Dr. Morton Prince wrote a book about MPD that is a foundation for the disorder. A few years after it was published Sigmund Freud dismissed the disorder and this dropped it from being discussed at any credible mental health meetings. Since then the disorder has been overlooked and misdiagnosed as either schizophrenia or psychosis. Many in the medical profession did not believe that a person could unknowingly have more than one personality or person inside one body, even after the in the 1950's Three Faces of Eve was published by two psychiatrist. In 1993, records showed that three to five thousand patients were being treated for MPD compared to the hundred cases reported ten years earlier. There is still as increase in the number of cases being reported as the scientific community learns more and more about the disease and the public is becoming more and more aware of this mental disorder. There are still many questions left unanswered about the disease, like Is it genetic? or Is a certain type of personality more vulnerable to the disorder? but many aspects of how people come by the disorder are already answered (Clark, 1993, p.17-19) MPD is commonly found in adults who were recurrently abused mentally, physically, emotionally, and/or sexually as young children, between birth to 8 years of age. The child uses a process called dissociation to remove him/herself from the abusive situation. Dissociation is when a child makes up an imaginary personality to take control of the mind and body while the child is being abused. The child can imagine many personalities but usually there is a personality for every feeling and or emotion that was involved during the abuse (BoyyM, 1998, p.1). As an adult, the abused child finds it hard to keep track of time and may have episodes of amnesia. Other symptoms that will appear in adults with MPD are depression, auditory and visual hallucinations (hearing voices) and suicidal thoughts. Another major symptom is when the adult has no recollection of their childhood. The adult with MPD has no idea they were abused as children and also unaware of the other personalities living inside of their head (Multiple Personality Disorder-fact sheet, 1996-99, p.1). Multiple Personality Disorder is when there is the presence of two or more distinct identities or personalities, each with its own relatively enduring pattern of perceiving, relating to, and thinking about the environment and self(BoyyM, 1998, p.1). There can be anywhere from two to over a hundred different personalities. Usually each personality will fall into one of the following categories: core, host, protectors, internal self-helper, fragments, child members, preteen, teenager, adults, artistic/music, cross-gender, cross-colored, animal members, inanimate members (BoyyM, 1998, p. 2-3). The host personality is the person who is the multiple, this is the original personality, or the one that created the other personalities, but is unaware of them. The most common apparent identities are the child, persecutor, rescuer, and helper. The child is the identity that is under the age of twelve. They behave as children often sucking thumbs, twisting hair, like to eat cookies, throw tantru ms, and use child-like vocabulary. The Persecutor identity is the self-destructive identity that is violent and angry. Persecutor identities usually have a drug/alcohol problem and generally put the host at risk. The rescuer personality is usually devoid of emotion but logical, able, proficient, and responsible. The helper personality knows the most about the history of the multiple; they generally want to help everyone for the general good. The helper personality is the personality that is most helpful in therapy because they usually know about all the other identities (Clark, 1993, p.80-83). The Sugar Industry of India INTRODUCTION Sugar industry is one of the most important agro-based industries in India and is highly responsible for creating significant impact on rural economy in particular and countrys economy in general. Sugar industry ranks second amongst major agro-based industries in India. As per the Government of Indias recent liberalised policy announced on 12th December, 1986 for licensing of additional capacity for sugar industries during 7th five-year plan, there will be only one sugar mill in a circular area of 40 sq km. Also the new sugar mill is allowed with an installation capacity of 2500 TCD (Tonne Sugar Cane crushed per day) as against the earlier capacity norms of 1250 TCD. Similarly, the existing sugar mills with sugar cane capacity of about 3500 TCD can crush sugar cane tothe tune of 5000 TCD with a condition imposed that additional requirement of sugar cane be acquired through increased productivity and not by expansion of area for growing sugar cane. Cane sugar is the name given to sucr ose, a disaccharide produced from thesugarcane plant and from the sugar beet.   The refined sugars from the two sources are practically indistinguishable and command the same price in competitive markets. However, since they come from different plants, the trace constituents are different andcan be used to distinguish the two sugars. One effect of the difference is the odor in thepackage head space, from which experienced sugar workers can identify the source. In the production scheme for cane sugar, the cane cannot be stored for more thana few hours after it is cut because microbiological action immediately begins to degrade the sucrose. This means that the sugar mills must be located in the cane fields. The raw sugar produced in the mills is item of international commerce. Able to be stored for years, it is handled as raw material shipped at the lowest rates directly in the holds ofships or in dump trucks or railroad cars and pushed around by bulldozers. Because it is not intended to be eaten directly, it is not handled as food. The raw sugar is shipped to th e sugar refineries, which are located in population centers. There it is refined to a food product, packaged, and shipped a short distance to the market. In a few places, there is arefinery near or even within a raw-sugar mill. However, the sugar still goes through rawstage. The principle by-product of cane sugar production is molasses. About 10 15% of the sugar in the cane ends up in molasses. Molasses is produced both in the raw-sugarmanufacture and also in refining. The blackstrap or final molasses is about 35 40% sucrose and slightly more than 50% total sugars. In the United States, blackstrap is used almost entirely for cattle feed.   In some areas, it is fermented and distilled to rum or industrial alcohol. The molasses used for human consumption is of a much higher grade, and contains much more sucrose. Sugarcane characteristics: Sugarcane contains not only sucrose but also numerous other dissolved substances, as well as cellulose or woody fibre. The percentage of sugar in the canevaries from 8 to 16% and depends to a great extent on the variety of the cane, its maturity, condition of the soil, climate and agricultural practices followed. Singh has promised economic reforms such as the deregulation of state-run sectors, introducing more foreign investment into areas like insurance, and boosting spending on infrastructure to allow India to compete with the likes of China. But some reforms face endangering the Congress partys pro-poor inclusive growth manifesto and dashing hopes of a major revival in Uttar Pradesh, where Gandhi scion  Rahul Gandhi  has reached out to the poor in high-profile campaigns. Any reforms face the stark fact that two-thirds of Indias population lives in villages. One reform, bringing in foreign investment in retail, has already floundered because of opposition in rural areas. While Narendra Murukumbi Managing Director at  Shree Renuka Sugars  hails the FRP concept, Investment Advisor  SP Tulsian  considers it to be an ill-conceived move and says that the farmers should be happy with Rs 210 per quintal. However, Murukumbi says, â€Å"We are currently paying Rs 230 per quintal in Karnataka.† Cane prices need to be resolved bilaterally—two-third share to farmers would be fair, he adds. Sugar deficit is a global phenomenon.â€Å"Last year there was a deficit of about nine million tonne. However, this years deficit is probably five-six million tonne and prices have reacted accordingly,† says Kingsman Sas Managing Director Jonathan Kingsman.
